Feeding the birds

Feeding the birds

What a week it’s been, Barak Obama was sworn in as the first African-American President of the USA, YAY! Britain ‘officialy’ entered a recession, BOO! And Andy Murray is romping through the Oz Open making great progress to his first Grand Slam victory, WOOHOO!

I’ve had an extremely mixed week. With all the Blue Monday-ness hanging around it’s been a tough one.

Unfortunately Hubbie didn’t get the job at the Beeb that he was hoping for so things are a little low again today. He has taken it quite hard and it’s tricky to know what to do. Think I’ll do what I’m best at and make a tasty dinner for this evening, might even hoover the house too!

In the garden things are a little brighter. The spring bulbs that I planted last Autumn have started to surface and serve as a great reminder that better times are just around the corner. 🙂 Chin Up

Blue Monday 09

Raasay House ablaze- borrowed from Life at theEnd of the Road What a completely weird weekend it’s been. I had a joint birthday party on Friday for 4 of our friends who were turning 30. It was good fun, loads of folk there that hadn’t seen in about 10 years! We used to all go to a Glasgow night club called Yang and was strange seeing us all grown up and still acting the same! Bit being in a strange timewarp.

Saturday was a lazy day, I went on an epic adventure to find the papers! It always sells out, I must remember to reserve it in future to save me the trek. I wonder if you can still get paper boys?

Got some sad news on Sunday, a friend of ours who had been ill for a long time sadly passed away. She was so young to have been so ill but wont go into it here. Suffice to say it was a sad start to the day.

Later on that day I was reading our Raasay’s contacts blog and learned the awful news that Raasay House had burnt down during the night. The real tragedy was that the building had been under renovation for that past year after almost decades of planning, she was due to be handing back to the islanders tomorrow after an extensive refit and now it’s all gone. I am so close to the island and my favourite place in the world is sitting on the steps outside the Big House and staring down to the sea, the old battery and across to Skye. I cant imagine how heartbreaking it is for the islanders. With such a small community and so few jobs the House is a source of great importance. I just hope it can be repaired and that the extensive damage doesn’t lead to the old facade being torn down.

So today was Blue Monday, officially the most depressing day of the year. It has been pretty bleak but I took my friend Martin for a drive to a local park and we went a walk round feeding the swans and munching on some tasty cake in the wee tearoom before the snow set in and we headed home to get warm with a tasty chorizo stew.

Wild Weather

As is the norm for this time of year, and around the full moon, we are being battered with winds and rains at the moment. The cats cant stand it so have decided just to annoy me all day instead of going outside on their usual adventures.
I got the Boywonder, our web assistant at the office, back today after his 3 month travels round the USA. Was great having an extra pair of hands and looking forward to having him back full-time soon, when the pennies allow. I was doing a lot of multitasking today between projects but hoping to spend a whole day designing things tomorrow. Satyed indoors all day yesterday and today to avoid the weather but going to go for a wee jaunt round the block just now and then a session on the cross trainer beckons. Struggling a bit to make it ‘routine’ just feels ‘boring’ but need to keep at it.
Attempted to cook a saffron risotto for dinner but didnt quite get the hand of the rice, was a bit undercooked and Hubby wasn’t keen. Ah well I can always pick up a chippy on my wee walk!

Following the purchase of our new Sony Bravia TV Hubbie decided to save us £50+ by modifying our old TV stand. It used to hole a 26″ Sanyo TV and had little plugs to make sure the tele stayed in place. Huby sawed these off and then spray painted the stand black so now it matches the new fireplace and the black surround of the new TV. Clever Hubbie! My amazing friend from back home donated 4 rhubarb crowns to our new garden so while I was working on Friday Hubby planted them in their new home. We’ve tried one at the back of the garden which is quite shady and we’ve added another one into a sunnier space to see which one fares better. The second spot had also been well manured last season and I’ve heard that will help so finger’s crossed. We had some friends over last night to enjoy the warm fireplace and savour some of our favourite Sailor Jerry rum, sooo tasty! The weather is completely wild today, heavy winds and now the rain, it’s my least favourite type of weather when I’m stuck in the city. When I used to live beside the sea I would love this weather as you could get all wrapped up then walk along the front and see the huge waves crashing on the shore, at some points on the island the waves would smash onto the main streets! great fun and quite humbling to remember how small we are. After a few rums last night we moved onto the topic of Quantum theory , not one of us managed to explain the very basics, which is terrible! need to brush up on Schroidingers Cat!

So far so brilliant I have been on a complete efficiency drive this week! Had a tender document due in today and stayed up late on it last night as I was completely in ‘the zone’ where the ideas don’t stop coming, great fun but means you can never get to sleep. All went remarkably well and was all emailed off by lunchtime which left lots of time to get my to do list scrubbed down to almost nothing. A great way to finish a busy, crazy weird week. Realised the business owed me a wee bit of money so took myself and Hubbie to Makro to treat ourselves to a new Sony HD TV. Quite impressive bit of kit and is settling in nicely ine the newly decorated living room. Sitting down to a nice glass of rum and watching ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’, I hate Matt Damon but I quite like this movie so I’m off to relax.

Managed to get up in time to get onto my Mac by 10am today woohoo! Back to pre-Christmas Timeframe although I am totally knackered now. Had lots of little admin things to do this morning but was great getting the huge to-do list down to a more manageable size. Then popped into town for a meeting with my bizpartner and our long lost staff member who has been away travelling for the past 3months. Thankfully he seems keen to come back to work and both guys seemed to like my strategic plan for the next few months, exciting times. Then had a meeting with a friend of mine who I am helping to get a website up and running, also got a tour of his new photography studio. All looking like a great wee business and am keen to help out with any advice if possible, it can be such a nightmare trying to find funding and support when setting up as it can feel really overwhelming.
Came home and Hubbie had wallpapered the hallway and put a new carpet down, very fancy and makes it all seem more homely.

Bleary Eyed

Still getting accustomed to the fact that I have to get up and work before midday, work has been a little testing lately!

Big things went wrong at work yesterday and my advice to anyone who is setting out for the first time is GET IT ALL IN WRITING! I was told the same advice myself when setting up 5 years ago but didn’t ever find the need until yesterday when I finally got, what is known in the business as, shafted! Business partnerships really are like marriages, my sister jokes all the time that I have both a work husband and a home husband and she’s probably right. All my life decisions have to be agreeable across both parties or it just wont work out. Worth remembering if you’re thinking on setting up a partnership with someone. None of what happened should affect the existing business but I’ll be being a lot more watchful in the future!

Anyway, I spent the morning in a 3 hour client meeting, lengthy I know! Thankfully the client is a delight and the project is nearing it’s completion. There are some final bugs we’re trying to iron out but it should be great for the company when we get it up and running as it has been the largest job in size and in profile that we have ever undertaken.

Had a brilliant afternoon at a much needed massage session, seems the stress I thought I was storing in my shoulders has travelled further south and is now causing me quite a bit of lower back pain but ah well, a wee shot on the cross trainer and I can head off to bed with my gardening catalogues and a cuppa! The high life indeed.
